Our adolescent years can be some of the most confusing as they inevitably bring forth drastic life transitions. An influx of hormones in the body creates rapid changes that can cause problems on the skin, such as acne, eczema, and warts, to name a few. Teenagers start becoming more concerned with their skin as they get older, and understandably so. Yearbook pictures, prom, and other school dances are common in middle and high school. We want to look our best, but when your skin isn’t in good shape, these activities can feel more like a burden rather than an enjoyable experience. As a result, many teenagers turn to skincare solutions to counteract the conditions brought on by hormonal changes and other growth factors.

Use a gentle cleanser

A cleanser is considered any product that cleans and removes dirt from the skin. In the case of facial cleansers, you will want one that will be gentle on the skin, especially if you suffer from acne. A harsh facial cleanser that contains sugar, sea salt, or coffee grounds may be too rough on the skin, which can lead to the popping of pimples and scarring. You will also want to avoid using soaps that aren’t meant to clean the face, as they can clog pores and cause irritation. A cleanser that contains salicylic acid or vitamins are good for oily skin.

Moisturize your skin

Using a facial moisturizer twice daily can combat dry, cracked skin can leave your face feeling plump and hydrated. Use a light-weight moisturizer that doesn’t contain oils to prevent pores from becoming clogged. You also have the option of choosing a moisturizer that contains sunscreen to prevent damage from UV rays and dark spots on the skin. If you have sensitive skin, it’s best not to use moisturizes that contain fragrances as these can dry out the skin and cause irritation.

Exfoliate the skin

Exfoliation means to remove the old, dead cells from the surface of the skin. You can exfoliate your skin once a week to combat the effects of hormonal changes. Look for products that contain clay, oatmeal, baking soda, or cinnamon for a fresh, clean exfoliation that will leave your skin feeling refreshed. Some exfoliators also contain AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids) and salicylic acid, which can be great for the skin.

Acne treatment

Most teens experience at least some acne throughout school due to spikes in hormone levels. Acne is caused by bacteria and clogged pores on the surface of the skin. For these reasons, you can try using a face wash, cream, or foaming cleanser that contains antimicrobial or anti-inflammatory agents. Benzoyl peroxide is often considered one of the best acne treatments for adolescents. If you find that over the counter (OTC) products aren’t helping much, make an appointment with a dermatologist for a second opinion.

Avoid touching your face

Our hands contain many germs that we pick up from touching doorknobs, shaking other peoples’ hands, and handling other objects. It may be tempting to touch your face throughout the day, especially if you aren’t aware you’re even doing it. Some teenagers may touch their face due to social anxiety or a compulsive disorder. When acne is involved, an adolescent may feel compelled to pick at pimples and blackheads, but this can spread infection and lead to scarring down the road. It’s important to wash your hands frequently and become more aware of when you touch your face.

Use silicone to treat scars

Unfortunately, many teens don’t come out of their adolescent years unscathed. Whether they suffered from severe acne or some other skin condition, scarring is a possibility. Luckily, old and new scars can be treated topically with medical-grade silicone gel. Silicone works simply and effectively through dermal hydration and collagen regulation to flatten and fade scars. You can purchase silicone gel through your physician or online at Biodermis.com.
