Medical Grade Silicone Myths - Busted

The thing about myths is that once proven to be false, eventually word gets around and whatever that false ideology may have been will be known going forward as a myth. There are many medical grade silicone myths. Today we will discuss some of the most popular myths and why they have been debunked. As a reader you can always refer to our website Biodermis.com and click the "Learn More" tab for more information. Myths

Myth #1: Silicones are synthetic and therefore bad for the human body.

The truth: Silicones are polymers made up of the natural mineral silicon (also known as silica) combined with oxygen. Silicones have a natural foundation--only the process that creates the silicones used in cosmetics is synthetic, which has no negative implications for human health.

Myth #2: Silicones clog pores and therefore cause acne.

The truth: In reality, silicones are air-permeable, ensuring that they don't suffocate the skin. No evidence supports the claim that silicones block pores or exacerbate acne in any form.

Myth #3: Silicones are bad for the environment.

The truth: Silicone rubber is sustainable, derived from the abundant material silicon found in sand, and doesn't rely on non-renewable oils. It's eco-friendly because of its high purity and lack of harmful emissions. Think of silicone as a type of synthetic rubber: it doesn't degrade into harmful micro-pieces like some plastics and is flexible, durable, and free from harmful chemicals like phthalates and BPA. It's also non-toxic and odorless.

Myth #4: All silicones, whether premium-grade or not, perform equally well in scar management.

The truth: Non-medical or professional grade silicones haven't been studied as extensively in the context of scar management, mainly because they are not manufactured to the same strict standards.  The purity, consistency, and bio-compatibility of premium-grade silicone are what make it a preferred choice for healthcare applications.

Myth #5: Vitamin E, Onion Extract, Steroid Injections, and non-Medical grade silicone are as effective as Premium silicone.

The truth: According to the American Academy of Dermatology, scar treatments that contain ingredients such as onion extract, vitamin A, and vitamin E are inconclusive.
