Silicone gel sheeting is often effective for reducing appearance of scars

Many scar treatments exist today, ranging from therapies that one can employ at home to gels and procedures that can be acquired from a physician.

Conditions such as acne, allergies and skin diseases can leave behind unsightly blemishes, according to OneIndia. Some experts suggest that honey, sandalwood powder, rose water and even cucumber can be applied to scars to help reduce their appearance. Others believe that vitamin E oil can not only improve skin's appearance, but nourish it as well.

However, for more severe scars, the use of silicone gel sheeting has emerged as an efficient and effective way to lessen the severity of these marks. Herbal Remedy Shop reports that silicone helps encourage keloid scars to soften, flatten and lighten in pigmentation.

It is believed that the compound stimulates repair of the dysfunctional top layer of the skin. When applied, silicone gel sheeting acts on the scars and is generally easy to use and clean, and is comfortable and safe, according to the source.

This technique has also been used on hypertrophic scarring and deep-degree burns, and may even lessen the appearance of stretch marks following pregnancy.

According to a journal article published in the dermatology journal Skin and Aging, keloids may affect up to 16 percent of African-American and Hispanic patients.
