Because most teenagers are at a time in their life in which their bodies are rapidly changing, they may experience self-conscious thoughts and feel the need to fit in. As a result, increasingly more young people are considering plastic surgery.
While the U.S. Food and Drug Administration forbids breast augmentation surgery for anyone younger than 18, and most plastic surgeons refuse to perform liposuction on patients younger than 17, many in the field are discussing how to handle teenagers who want cosmetic surgery, MSNBC.com reports.
Although many surgeons are cautious about performing plastic surgery on teens, Dr Nancy Snyderman, NBC's chief medial editor, pointed out three surgical procedures that she thought were appropriate for teens.
Specifically, she referenced a 15-year-old who got a boost of confidence from a nose job, a 17-year-old who had his ears pinned back to so he would feel secure enough to cut his hair and pursue a career as a fireman, and a 19-year-old who had breast reductive surgery so she could maintain an athletic lifestyle.
While some cosmetic procedures come with the risk of leaving surgical scars, teens can use products such as silicone gel sheeting to reduce the scar's appearance and pursue a normal life.
