Podiatrist warns against overzealous scar treatment
The Benefits of Silicone Products
Epi-Derm™ Standard Silicone Gel Sheet - $40.00
Pro-Sil™ - $18.50
Xeragel® (XSO-797) - $16.30Scars can appear on just about any body part, and with the importance placed on physical beauty in today's society, it's of little wonder why many people turn to the scar treatment injury to repair or minimize the appearance of their blemishes.
According to Dr Chris Milkie of the Mayfair Foot Clinic in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, foot scars are most commonly the cause of blisters and cuts that form when ill-fitting shoes wreak havoc on their wearer's skin.
Though the podiatrist addresses the use of over-the-counter creams, exfoliation and laser treatments to minimize a scar's appearance on the feet, he's not fully convinced that these methods are the fail-safe solution.
"Scars on your feet can definitely be unsightly, but there are certainly ways to treat them and to help reduce their appearance," Milkie commented.
He added, "Whether you try to get rid of your scars through exfoliation or through laser treatments with your podiatrist, just be careful to not be overzealous in your quest for scar removal, as that can only worsen the appearance of the scar and even cause additional scarring."
Using silicone gel sheeting on foot scars may be a safer method, as the product has been shown to reduce the size and pigmentation of scars without the threat of further topical damage.
