Plastic surgeon gives tips to potential patients

The decision to undergo cosmetic surgery can represent a major dilemma for many surgery candidates. While potential patients often see the need to change their body via a breast augmentation or tummy tuck procedure, some don't know what to expect or how they will look after the operation.

Dr Michael Cohen, a surgeon at Townson's Cosmetic Surgery Center of Maryland, advises that those considering plastic surgery should research their procedure and surgeon prior to going under the knife, the Baltimore Sun reports.

Specifically, the surgeon told the news sources that the ideal plastic surgery candidates should affirm "that the problem or concern of theirs is real and something that is fixable."

He added, "You want to look out for people whose expectations are unreal or [who are] seeking out plastic surgery to correct other social or emotional issues."

In addition, the surgeon advised that patients ensure that their doctor is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, and warned of small side effects, such as scarring, that can occur.

Many physical therapy patients find the need for scar treatment products such as silicone ointment to hydrate and reduce the appearance of their surgical scars.
