Surgeons using techniques without making incisions

Surgeons are beginning to use more techniques that do not require them to make incisions on a patient in order to save their life.

According to The Vancouver Sun, more operations are being performed using the natural orifices of the body, cutting down on the need for incisions and reducing the chance of visible scars.

Marion Fitzgerald was diagnosed with a tumor behind her eye, and she was expecting that doctors would have to cut into her skull in order to remove it. Today she has no visible scars anywhere on her head because surgeons used a technique where they removed the tumor through her nose.

The procedure took eight hours and was led by Dr. Amin Kassam, a neurosurgeon, who created a pathway through Fitzgerald's nasal cavity. Doctors were able to dissect and remove the tumor through her nostril.

Surgeons are also exploring other techniques where they are able to reach internal organs such as the stomach by going through the mouth.

These techniques are not commonly practiced though, and many surgeons will still use traditional procedures when operating on a patient. In these cases, patients may want to use scar treatment products such as silicone gel sheeting, which may help diminish the appearance of the marks.
