One common reason for dissatisfaction with plastic surgery is the chance of troublesome scars that can develop as a result of surgery. Such scars can be treated with silicone ointments or gels.
Dr. Jill Hessler and several colleagues interviewed patients at a facial cosmetic surgery center in 2007 and 2008 before their operations. Six months later, they reevaluated the patients.
The data showed that patients over the age of 53 were happier with their surgery than younger patients. The authors of the study, which appeared in the Archives of Facial Plastic Surgery, speculated that this may be because older patients have more realistic expectations about the effects of their surgery.
The authors further wrote that learning about the factors that cause people to be dissatisfied with plastic surgery "could be highly useful to surgeons."
If a patient is dissatisfied with their surgery because of scarring, there is an easy solution. Silicone gel sheeting can visibly reduce the appearance of scars.
