While she initially tried to ignore it, it grew so fast that, within a month, she went to see a doctor.
Her diagnosis didn't seem promising, as the physicians told her that she would need surgery immediately. The operation occurred on the same day as her birthday. Now, Gamble writes that she has a scar that will remind her of the day forever.
Luckily, the lump that was removed proved to be a benign growth that was just a formation of breast tissue. Gamble still recalls the way that she felt before she knew for certain whether the lump was cancerous or not.
Now, she states that she has an ugly scar to remind her of those feelings every day.
The American Cancer Society estimates that around 39,840 women died in 2010 from breast cancer and 207,090 new cases were diagnosed this year.
Some scar treatments can prove to be effective against marks from surgery. Applying silicone gel sheeting can make lifelong scars fade away so that patients can live their life without the constant reminder of the operation.
