Procedure helps breast cancer survivor

After Elizabeth Anderson underwent a bilateral mastectomy, she was told that she was not a good candidate for breast implants or breast reconstruction because she had undergone radiation.

According to CNN, Anderson had been diagnosed with stage three breast cancer and opted to have her breasts removed. She was then given prosthetic breasts to wear but found them uncomfortable. The toll it took on her emotionally was intense.

"This is zero. This is scars on your chest. This is absolutely nothing," she told the news source. "As a woman, to look in that mirror and not see anything, it doesn't feel right."

Anderson was told of a procedure where doctors would take her fatty tissue from her buttocks or abdomen and use it to reconstruct her breasts. In order for her to have this operation she had to gain 23 pounds. After 18 months without breasts she got them back in October and is thrilled to resume her life as normally as possible.

Surgical procedures often leave behind scars, but patients can use products such as silicone ointment that may help diminish the appearance of the marks.
