Plastic surgeons help breast cancer patients regain some confidence

Breast cancer is a disease that can ravage a woman's body, and sometimes a patient may be faced with difficult decisions regarding treatment and surgery.

Often, when a woman undergoes a mastectomy, plastic surgeons are called in to provide breast reconstruction. The procedures take a toll on the patient both physically and emotionally, but the joy they feel after everything is completed is well worth it.

"During the initial period of my diagnosis all my thoughts were on recovery, now I want to get back with my life again. I want to look good. I want to feel healthy. And I think the reconstruction has helped me with that," said breast cancer patient Wai Yee.

Undergoing a breast reconstruction, or any type of cosmetic procedure, offers a patient the chance to improve their appearance and self-confidence in one area or the other. Some surgeries are minimally-invasive, but for procedures such as breast reconstruction, augmentation or tummy tucks, surgeons have to make incisions in order to reach the particular area.

With these incisions may come scarring, so patients who want to reduce the appearance of these marks may want to use silicone gel sheeting, which may help diminish the scar.
