New surgical technique minimizes scarring

Jason Schroyer was born with a deformed spine that caused him to hunch, but recently underwent a surgical procedure to correct the condition, Live5News.com reports.

Doctors performed a procedure called video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery for the spine. The practice employs the use of a small handheld controller and a camera to see inside of the patient. Surgeons can then use the images on the screen to guide them.

Instead of opening up the patient's chest and moving his or her organ's aside to fix a spine curvature, which is done in the traditional procedure, doctors can now make four small incisions in the side of the chest and perform the procedure through those four cuts, according to the new source.

The new technique leaves minimal scarring compared to the older surgical method, which resulted in a very large scar across the chest.

Scar treatment products like silicone gel sheeting and ointment may help reduce the appearance of scars and marks resulting from surgeries.ADNFCR-3015-ID-19928728-ADNFCR
