Less invasive option for spinal surgery

A new, less invasive procedure, may now be performed on patients in need of spinal surgery, The New Straits Times reports.

The new procedure, minimally invasive spine surgery (MISS), lowers the risk of infections and also lessens the chance that nerves will be damaged.

Developed by Dr Stefan Hellinger, orthopedic surgeon at the Isar Klinik in Munich, the surgery allows for quicker healing times and also reduced appearance of a scar, with only a small keyhole-sized mark being left from the technique, according to the news source.

"The procedure under local anaesthetic allows a patient to recover faster than those who opt for an open procedure," he told the news source.

Dr Hellinger has introduced the technique to surgeons in Malaysia, hoping to expand the services globally and provide patients with more options.

Surgical procedures may sometimes be necessary to cure an ailment or repair an injury, and often they leave behind scars where incisions may have been made.
