Breast cancer survivors prefer silicone implants

A new study has revealed that breast cancer survivors who undergo reconstruction surgery prefer silicone over saline implants.

According to The New York Times, women who receive the silicone implants are much happier with the results compared to those who received the saline versions.

This comes as a surprise as there had been years of controversy surrounding the use of silicone implants in general. The FDA had put a ban on silicone implants in the early 1990s, and only lifted it in 2006 after discovering that they did not contribute to any major illnesses, as had been reported.

Women who undergo a mastectomy often choose to undergo reconstructive surgery after completing treatment for breast cancer, but they're often left wondering which option is best for them. Researchers have found that many women prefer the look and feel of silicone compared to saline. Doctors do acknowledge that silicone tends to wrinkle less than saline as well.

Individuals who undergo surgery may often be left with scarring, but the use of silicone gel sheeting or ointment may help reduce the appearance of the marks.
