Advancements in orthopedic treatment reduces scarring

Orthopedic surgeons are beginning to utilize minimally-invasive techniques that can have a patient back on the job within a few weeks with little scarring and reduced recovery time, MDNews.com reports.

Orthopedic surgery often involves the hips and other main joints that are essential to everyday movements and functions. Arthroscopic surgery is used to treat various joint disorders, but there are also minimally invasive procedures available. The benefits of a minimally-invasive surgery also include smaller incisions, less blood loss, less chance of muscle damage and pain and quicker recovery time.

"For example, patients with less physically strenuous employment, or white collar workers, can have hip or knee replacement surgery and be back to work in about two to three weeks. They won't be fully recovered, but they can function at work and get around," Dr. Brian McGinley, orthopedic surgeon at St. Charles Hospital in Port Jefferson, New York, told the news source.

For those who undergo surgical procedures where scarring can't be avoided, the use of silicone ointment may help reduce the appearance of the marks with use over time.
