Massage therapist uses gel in scar treatment

A massage therapist in California has been adapting her craft to develop a unique scar healing technique at her Sanctum Therapy clinic.

Shannon Lynn Brown receives referrals from chiropractors and plastic surgeons to treat patients with both internal swelling and scar tissue and topical scars. The therapist purports to tailor her practice to scar and breast massage, the Santa Cruz Sentinel reports.

Dr Marie Pletsch, a plastic surgeon who specializes in breast augmentation, told the news source, "Generally speaking, massaging scars can loosen them up, and it sometimes helps reduce swelling."

Most treatment regimens take six or more weeks, and can even reduce the appearance of scars that formed more than 30 years ago.

Depending on the type of scar she is treating, Brown will use a combination of deep tissue massage, Chinese cupping techniques and various gels.

Silicone gel alone has been proven useful in helping hydrate topical scars, thereby reducing their appearance on a patient's skin.

"I have yet to have a scar not look significantly different after therapy," Brown told the Sentinel.ADNFCR-3015-ID-19657236-ADNFCR
