New scar treatment may help burn victims

Rachel Krango was only 17 when she was injured in a freak accident that left more than a third of her body scarred.

Krango was in the shower of a hotel room when she collapsed, leaving scalding hot water to pour down on her. As ABC affiliate WCVB reports, she thought that she would be living with these scars for the rest of her life.

"I remember vaguely turning the hot water handle on and that's all I remember. Literally. And the next thing I knew, I was laying on the ground with paramedics," she told the news source.

Thanks to a new procedure being utilized by doctors at Mass General Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, Krango is receiving treatment for the burn scars, with the color and appearance of the marks being altered.

The treatment had originally been used on age-related wrinkles, but as the news source reports, doctors discovered that is also triggers a reaction in the skin to help improve its texture.

Burn scar victims may also use silicone gel sheeting or ointment to help diminish the appearance of the marks.
