New laser claims to leave smaller scars

Xeragel® (XSO-797) - $16.30A new surgical laser from Canada is believed to provide patients faster healing time and also leave smaller scars compared to more traditional surgical approaches.
The Winnipeg Free Press reports that researchers compared the new laser to conventional lasers and more traditional surgical instruments. When using the laser on mice they found that it left a scar that was half the width of those that are the result of using the other methods.
"I would not be surprised if people are starting to use this clinically, at least part of clinical trials, within the year," Dr Benjamin Alman told the news source.
Researchers do note that more studies must be conducted before entering into human clinical trials because the way a mouse scars is different than how a human does.
This may be a breakthrough in minimizing scarring, but it does not get rid of the scar completely. Patients who undergo a surgical procedure may want to use scar treatment products like silicone ointment which may help diminish the appearance of any marks incurred during surgery.
