Australian researchers receive grant for scar treatment study

Scar healing is a branch of medicine that few people think about - unless, that is, their daily lives are changed by the presence of a noticeable surgery scar or wound.

Luckily, researchers around the globe are at work investigating new ways to help minimize the appearance of scars and speed up the healing of chronic wounds.

Specifically, the Wound Healing Laboratory at the Women's and Children's Health Research Institute in Australia, recently received a $517,500 grant from Australia's National Health and Medical Research Council to help advance their wound and scar treatment studies, The Australian reports.

The research team, led by British investigator Allison Cowin, has formed several promising leads in wound treatment, including the identification of a protein that restricts wound healing and the capacity of young skin to heal without scars.

Cowin told the news source, "My team is preparing a grant application for research looking at fetal wound healing, as fetal skin has a remarkable capacity to heal without scaring."
