Plastic surgery becoming more popular among African Americans

In some circles, such as Hollywood and the communities of Silicon Valley, plastic surgery has not only become accepted, but routine.

As TV shows such as ABC's Extreme Makeover and E! channel's Dr 90210 draw in increasingly more viewers, the image of the cosmetic surgery industry appears to be changing in other enclaves of the public as well, the Seattle Medium reports.

Specifically, more than 900,000 African Americans underwent plastic surgery in 2008, representing a 145 percent increase since 2000, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).

"I think it speaks to our culture being more mainstream," Dr Shane Perrault, an African American psychologist from Maryland, told the news source.

He added, "There was a time when we didn't do things because it felt like we were selling out. That mentality is gone and now we have a more glamorized, mainstream focus."

The ASPS reports that liposuction, nose reshaping and breast reduction are the most common surgical procedures among African American patients.

Because some of these surgeries leave behind scars, patients may opt to use products like silicone gel sheeting and silicone ointment to reduce the appearance of the surgery scars after the procedure.ADNFCR-3015-ID-19677924-ADNFCR
