Yet a new study suggests that weight loss surgery may do more for obese women than improve their physical appearance and self esteem it may actually help them have healthier babies.
In a new study of medical records performed by researchers at Johns Hopkins University, obese women who have some form of bariatric surgery prior to their pregnancy are at a significantly lower risk for developing hypertensive disorders during it. These conditions, which include gestational hypertension, preeclampsia and eclampsia, often lead to complications with an unborn child and affect as much as seven percent of pregnancies in America.
By comparing five years of data from Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance records, researchers were able to determine that women who have undergone procedures like gastric bypass surgery reduced their risk of Preeclampsia and eclampsia by 80 percent, the risk of gestational hypertension by 74 percent, and chronic hypertension by 61 percent.
While the surgeries can result in healthier and safer pregnancies, they will still result in a scar. Patients would be advised to research an effective scar treatment like silicone ointment prior to going under the knife.
