In a report published in the journal Archives of Facial Plastic Surgery, a team of doctors at the Aesthetic Surgery Center in Naples, Florida, said they have successfully used the innovative procedure on 25 patients, BBC News reports.
Douglas McGeorge, a cosmetic surgeon and former president of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, told the news source, "There are lots of ways in increase the volume of the lips - this is another way."
He added, "It's not necessarily any better, but it may give more permanent results."
McGeorge further explained that patients who opt not to undergo a facelift in conjunction with the surgery will be left with a scar behind their hairline.
Because surgery scars are not unusual, many plastic surgeons have turned to silicone gels and ointments to help reduce the appearance of these topical blemishes.
Using silicone gel sheeting to curb scarring, patients who undergo the neck muscle graft technique can have fuller lips and a diminished scar within weeks after their surgery.
