Luke Cowdell was only one week old when he received a heart transplant because he was born with hypo-plastic left heart syndrome, The Times-Herald reports.

Luke is now in the first grade and is as energetic as every other child his age. He's active and enjoys reading and math. He loves to swim and did plenty of it this past summer. He has no problem showing off his transplant scar, and is enjoying life.

Cowdell still has to take anti-rejection drugs along with cholesterol and blood pressure medication, and must still go for checkups to make sure his body isn't rejecting his heart, but you'd never know this young boy underwent a transplant with the amount of energy he has.

Luke was fortunate enough to have had the transplant done when he was so young because doctors were able to give him an ABO-incompatible heart. He has type O blood, but because his body had not yet produced antibodies that would reject it, so he was able to receive a heart from another donor of a different blood type.

Scar treatment products like silicone ointment may help reduce the appearance of scars or marks.
