Joseph Backhouse was on vacation in Spain with his family when his mother, Kim, thought getting henna tattoos would a be bit of harmless fun. The 7-year-old may now be scarred for life as a result of the decorative designs, The Daily Mail reports.

The family was enjoying their holiday in Costa Blanca, Spain, and saw many other families allowing their children to get henna tattoos, so Backhouse decided to give in a let her son get one, too. When they returned home, Joseph began to complain about a rash where the tattoo had been, and it progressively got worse as the days passed.

She took him to the doctor and was then referred to a burn and plastic surgery specialist. They are now waiting to see if he will be left with a permanent mark.

"The scar is bright red with blisters all over the arm, you can see the outline of the tattoo," his mother told the news source.
