When Sandy Wilson gave birth to her son five years ago, she never imagined she would have to fight for her life, The Associated Press reports.

Wilson had her son via cesarean section and was told that she had acquired an infection during the procedure. She developed a clotting problem and was originally given donated blood components, but that did not help. Doctors tried removing the tissue that had become infected, but it began to spread rapidly, according to the news source.

Over a five-year period she had countless surgeries, including organ transplants. Her health would rebound and then deteriorate frequently and she spend a lot of time in the hospital. Wilson now has several scars where tissue and organs were removed and transplanted, the news outlet reports.

"My life now is pretty normal. I am enjoying spending every moment I can at home with my son," she told news provider.

Scar treatment products like silicone gel sheeting may help reduce the appearance of scars that are the result of complicated surgical procedures.ADNFCR-3015-ID-19922643-ADNFCR
