U.S. Olympic speed skater unconcerned with scar healing
With the Winter Olympics set to kick off this weekend, U.S. speed skater J.R. Celski is looking to completely recover from a September crash during the Olympic Trials, during which a skate blade slashed his thigh, leaving him with a grimace of a scar down his left leg.
The skate barely missed the Olympian's femoral, but after 60 stitches and several months of rehabilitation, Cleski is just about ready to race, the Seattle Times reports.
U.S. speed skating coach Jae Su Chun says the skater is more than 90 percent healed physically and about 95 percent proficient in terms of technique.
What remains is the six-inch long scar just above Celski's knee, a snapshot of which he keeps in his cell phone as source of pride, according to the news provider.
While he and doctors have the option to use scar treatment techniques like silicone gel sheeting, in which thick scar formation following a surgery or injury can be prevented by applying 3 to 4 inch silicone sheets to the affected area, Celski seems bent on keeping the mark.
"I'm not going to do anything to it. I want to be reminded of what I overcame," he said.
