Although is may seem like patients who opt for cosmetic procedures are getting younger, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) says the number has remained steady over the past few years.

According to ASAPS, the most common procedure conducted on the 18 and under demographic is rhinoplasty, which is most commonly referred to as a nose job.

If a teen is considering plastic surgery, it is essential for their parents and surgeon to determine if the young adult is ready to undergo the transformation. Certain criteria a patient must meet include physical maturity, emotional maturity and understanding the risks associated with the operation.

Besides rhinoplasty, breast reduction, corrective breast asymmetry and chin augmentation are common procedures performed on teens. Also, young men with excessive breast tissue may undergo a reduction to give them a more masculine body shape.

Teenagers and their parents should remember that some procedures may involve scarring. There are scar treatment products currently available, such as silicone ointment, that may help treat unwanted marks and reduce their appearance.
