Stabbing victim to undergo reconstructive surgery
Ilianexy Morales was living at home with her mother after leaving her abusive boyfriend when he came by her home and attacked her, slashing her with a knife.
WomensENews.org reports that the domestic abuse survivor is scheduled to undergo facial reconstruction surgery to help remove many of the scars that were inflicted upon her at the hands of her ex-boyfriend.
"The injuries were all over my body," she told the news source. "But of course when people see me, the first thing they see is my face."
Morales has already undergone surgeries to help repair damage that had been done to her muscles and nerves in her hands and arms. Those procedures were covered by her insurance, but the scarring to her face was considered cosmetic and therefore not covered.
She will be undergoing an operation for the scarring in December, thanks to a cosmetic surgeon who heard about her story. They are doing it for free and the surgery will be featured in a Discovery Health documentary.
Noticeable scars may be diminished with the application of products such as silicone get sheeting or ointment.
