For many parents, a child's injury can be a terrifying experience. Whether it's a scraped knee or something more serious, the proper healthcare procedures have been well-documented in numerous publications, but most tend to ignore the potential of the child's wound to form a scar. Fortunately for concerned parents, scar treatment can be broken into three simple stages.

The first stage is immediately following the injury. This first aid stage should involve cleaning and dressing the wound and assessing the severity of the injury. Parenting.com claims that gaping wounds, no matter how small, should be rushed to the emergency room in case they need stitches or worse.

During the lengthy healing process, parents should follow the doctor's orders or, if the wound was self-dressed, keep it moist by applying petroleum jelly or silicone ointment. This will expedite the healing process and reduce the risk of scarring.

After the wound heals, parents might want to treat the scar with silicone gel sheeting to reduce its appearance and applying sunscreen to prevent the sun from making the scar worse.

Dr Robin Gehris, a Pittsburgh dermatologist, tells the news provider that massaging the area two or three times a day will also speed up the healing process.ADNFCR-3015-ID-19703846-ADNFCR
