Robotic surgery used to enhance scar treatment
A medical care facility in Hong Kong is introducing a new method of surgery that dramatically reduces the appearance of scars, after South Korean doctors reported performing several successful procedures.
The Hong Kong Sanatorium and Hospital will use the robotic method for thyroid cancer patients, claiming that in addition to reducing scarring, the procedure inflicts less pain on patients, the Standard reports.
Anthony Yuen Po-wing, a professor of otorhinolaryngology at the University of Hong Kong, told the news source, "The length of the scar will be reduced to between five and 10 millimeters."
The robot's four arms can maneuver much more precisely than manual methods and can rotate 270 degrees, whereas human hands are limited to between 70 and 80 degrees of rotation.
"The mechanical scissors that are only 0.5 centimeter long can operate freely in a limited space," and a special "shock-mitigating device" makes the surgery safer and reduces surgical scars on the vocal chords near the thyroid.
Scar therapy has become an area of interest in the medical field. While robotic surgeries can reduce internal scaring, products like silicone gel sheeting can help shrink external scar tissue.
