Surgeons are able to perform thyroid surgery without having to make an incision on the neck, thanks to a new robot they use during the procedure, CNET.com reports.

The da Vinci Surgical System has enabled doctors to eliminate the scar on the neck that is a result of thyroid surgery. What they have actually done is relocate the scar to another area, but patients will no longer have to worry about their neck gaining any marks, according to the news provider.

The robot helped revolutionize urological and gynecological surgeries, and is now being used to access the thyroid through the armpit.

When the arm is raised, it provides a straight path to the thyroid, and the incision is now in a well hidden spot compared to where it would be on the neck.

"In my opinion, if you are committed to not having a neck scar, this is the best way to do it," David Terris, professor and chairman of the Medical College of Georgia Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, told the news source.

Individuals who have undegone a surgical procedure may sometimes be left with a scar in a visible area. There are new scar treatment products that could help them mask those marks.

Silicone ointments and gel sheeting may help reduce the appearance of scars whether they're from a skateboarding accident or a major medical procedure.ADNFCR-3015-ID-19882548-ADNFCR
