According to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), the number of dog bite injuries that required hospitalization grew 86 percent since 1993. The organization reports that between 1993 and 2008, dog bite cases increased from approximately 5,100 annually to 9,500.

The victims of these attacks were primarily children and the elderly. According to the report, for every 100,000 seniors between the ages of 65 and 84, there were 4.5 hospitalizations for dog bites. For those who are older than 85, that number was 4.2.

Residents of urban neighborhoods were four times less likely to be admitted into an emergency room and 3 times less likely to need hospitalization after incurring a dog bite, than those living in rural areas. In addition, 26 out of 866 emergency department patients were admitted for dog bite injuries in 2008.

DogsBite.org reports that the breeds most responsible for serious injury and death include pitbulls, rottweilers and presa canarios.

Those who require scar treatment for their dog bites may benefit from using silicone ointment, as it can reduce the appearance of scars.
