Individuals who are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer encounter a daunting procedure that may leave a very noticeable scar, ABC2 reports.

The procedure, referred to as a Whipple operation, requires surgeons to make a very large incision from the top of the chest, down to the pelvic area. Doctors then remove the pancreas and any other organ that may be affected by cancer. The recovery time is normally four weeks and, afterward, the patient may have a very large scar down the center of his or her torso, the news source reports.

Doctors Marty Makary and Barish Edil are now doing the procedure aparoscopically, leaving patients with three small incisions instead of the large scar, and cutting their recovery time down as well.

"By doing operations through minimum invasive techniques, patients can often get on with their lives and they have less pain," Dr Makary told the news source.

Individuals who have undergone surgery may be left with a scar as a result, but there are new scar treatment products available that may help them.

Silicone ointments and gel sheeting may help reduce the appearance of scars left over from a surgical procedure.ADNFCR-3015-ID-19893060-ADNFCR
