Novel surgery removes teen's bald spot, but leaves scar
After treatment to remove melanoma skin cancer left a 17-year-old with a large bald spot, doctors used a novel reconstructive surgery technique to ensure that the young lady never has a bad hair day.
Sara Gunsolus underwent treatment at the Mayo Clinic to remove a large black mole from her scalp, which contained an aggressive form of childhood melanoma skin cancer, KENS 5 San Antonio reports.
"We had to close it with a skin graft, and then the unfortunate thing for Sara was that it left an area of her scalp that didn't have hair," Dr Sarvam Terkonda of the Mayo Clinic told the news source.
After Gunsolus underwent radiation and chemotherapy, she was back on the operating table, as surgeons aimed to give her a full head of hair.
Using a surgical expanders and saline balloons, doctors stretched Gunsolus' skin, removed the bald spot, and brought the stretched skin back together.
Cancer free and boasting a beautiful hairdo, the young patient is left with just a scar from her reconstructive surgery.
Just like Gunsolus' bald spot was removed, the patient has the option to minimize the appearance of her surgical scar using scar healing products such as silicone gel sheeting or silicone ointment.
