Medical staff in Australia and New Zealand have been working with burn victims to help relieve the pain they experience and also to slow the progression of the skin tightening, The Herald Sun reports.

Scar tissue from burns tends to tighten the skin around the mouth which can cause pain and discomfort for victims and may also affect their ability to speak or eat.

A new process of massaging, stretching and exercising the skin has been shown to help slow the tightening.

Robyn Dean had 18 to 30 percent of her body burned in a fire, and has been receiving the new technique.

"All the scarring that you have, even if you don't see it on the skin, you have to work to the contrary all the time," she told the news source.

Burn scars may be painful, but there are new scar treatment products that may help reduce the appearance of the marks.

Silicone gel sheeting and ointments may help reduce the appearance of scars that are the result of burn or surgical procedures.ADNFCR-3015-ID-19929335-ADNFCR
