It used to be that when one underwent surgery for their thyroid, they would be left with a long horizontal scar marking where the incision was made. However, new techniques have helped leave patients without a long-lasting mark.

As NBC affiliate WPTV reports, some doctors have used a method that allows them to access the surgical point through the armpit, leaving the neck untouched. In addition, other medical facilities are using what is referred to as the facelift approach.

This provides patients with the ability to hide their scar beneath their hair, leaving it virtually undetectable.

"It shortens the distance we have to travel to get to the thyroid gland and reduced the amount of dissection required to get there," Dr David Terris of the Medial College of Georgia told the news source.

Surgeons make an incision behind the ear as if they were going to perform a facelift, resulting in a minimally-invasive procedure.

Scar treatment products such as silicone ointment may help reduce the appearance of scars as well.
