Glassing attacks have left one judge in Australia furious that he can't impose harsher penalties on those found guilty of a crime, especially compared to the pain they've inflicted on the victims.

According to GoldCoast.com.au, Judge Clive Wall let his feeling be known as he passed down a sentence of two years in jail with parole for Michael Sokol. Sokol was found guilty of assaulting Wayne Barrett in September 2008. He had punched Barrett in the face and then smashed a glass bottle on his cheek. Barrett allegedly made a comment about Sokol's mother, which prompted the attack.

"By no stretch of the imagination could [his insult] justify such a response from you, with or without a glass," Judge Wall said in his closing statement during sentencing.

Barrett was left with a five-centimeter scar along his cheek.

"These offences are extremely prevalent on the Gold Coast [and] if I had my way, the sentences which would be imposed on offenders would be heavier than the Court of Appeal appears to mandate," Judge Wall said.

The use of silicone ointment or gel sheeting may help reduce the appearance of marks incurred from an accident or assault.
