Cancer survivor shows off scar to encourage others
Antoinette Furlonge is a breast cancer survivor who appeared on the British television show How to Look Good Naked to help regain her confidence, but to also encourage others to talk about their illness.
The Voice reports that the 33-year-old felt that her battle with the disease took a toll not only on her body but her self-confidence. She said she had gone from being an outgoing woman to shy and reserved.
Over the course of her treatment she underwent chemotherapy, lymph removal, a mastectomy, breast reconstruction and radiation therapy. She had her right breast removed and after that she stopped looking in the mirror, afraid to see what her body looked like.
Furlonge went on How to Look Good Naked to regain her confidence and when she looked in the mirror she saw the scar that was the result of her reconstruction surgery for the very first time.
Surgical incisions may sometimes leave a scar, but the use of silicone gel sheeting over time may help reduce the appearance of the marks.
