Burn victims start organization to support survivors
Last year, three sisters from Texas started the Three For Hope Foundation. The Houston Chronicle reports that Trae, Jordan and Chandra Berns founded the organization in an effort to help burn victims who are in need of medical and emotional support.
The sisters are currently healthy. However, when they were 17 months old, their family's house was set on fire, resulting in third-degree burns on 30 percent to 45 percent of their bodies, as well as the death of their mother. According to the news source, the girls - who now study at the University of Texas at San Antonio - underwent numerous scar treatments in order to feel more comfortable in their skin.
"I don't think twice about my scars anymore," Trae told the news source. "A lot is because, as we've grown older, we've become more self-confident."
Today the sisters would like to expand their financial grants to burn survivors who are in need of treatment.
BurnSurvivor.com reports that there are approximately 10,000 pediatric burn injuries reported in the U.S. each year.
Adults and children who have suffered from burns may benefit from the use of silicone gel sheeting, which can reduce the appearance of scars.
