Brazilian government declares plastic surgery tax-deductible
Brazil, a country where plastic surgery is becoming increasingly popular, has recently ruled that plastic surgery is tax-deductible.
Brazil is quickly challenging the U.S. as a leading consumer of cosmetic surgery, according to Bloomberg. Last year, patients underwent an estimated 864,000 surgeries, according to the Brazilian Plastic Surgery Society. The American counterpart estimates 1.5 million surgeries in the U.S.
With so many people opting to go under the knife, scar treatment becomes an important consideration. Cosmetic surgery can leave ugly scars, but silicone ointments and gel sheeting can reduce the appearance of such marks.
In the U.S., only reconstructive surgery is considered tax-deductible.
Joaquim Adir, the income tax coordinator for the internal revenue service in Brazil, said that the government decided that "cosmetic surgeries are also about health, physical and mental, and should be included in the list of deductible expenses."
Those in Brazil now have an economic reason to consider plastic surgery, in addition to the impact it can have on mental health. And with the use of silicone gel sheeting, they won't have to worry about scar treatment afterwards.
