Misunderstanding leads to facial scar for innocent partygoer
An innocent man was left with a large scar on his forehead after a misunderstanding in a Welsh bar, the Flintshire Chronicle reports.
Kieran Day was out enjoying the nightlife with friends when he spotted his cousin from across the crowded room. He went over to say hello, but was spotted by her jealous companion.
Samuel John Illman of Holywell saw what he believed to be a stranger making romantic overtures to his girlfriend, and promptly smashed a bottle over the other man's head. The encounter ended in a scuffle between the two men on the floor.
Day was taken to the hospital, where he received 10 stitches to his wound, while Illman received 15 weeks in a young offenders institute and a fine.
"He utterly misread the situation," said Brian Treadwell, a representative for Illman, quoted by the news source. "He accepts that the contact was innocuous and entirely innocent, and he is extremely remorseful and makes no excuses."
A five-year study of bar violence conducted by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism revealed that bar fights tend to occur in darker, more crowded venues with younger clientele, according to CNS News.
Such violence may often result in lasting scars, and those who wish to cover larger marks may benefit from the use of silicone gel sheeting.
