Girl left with facial scar after being attacked by family dog
An Arizona girl has been left with a permanent facial scar after being attacked by the family dog, according to AZ Central.
Haliegh Townsend was playing in the backyard with her German shepherd when the dog jumped on her and bit her face. The girl's Pomeranian was also attacked when it rushed to her rescue, and both were bleeding profusely.
Kevin Townsend, who heard his daughter scream, rushed outside with a gun and attempted to shoot the German shepherd. The dog was unharmed, but a bullet struck a neighbor's window, resulting in a charge of felony for Townsend.
"I fired all six shots and emptied the gun," he told the news source. "As much as I loved the dog, I love my daughter a lot more."
The German shepherd was taken away by a neighbor, while Haliegh was rushed to the hospital. There, the 12-year-old received 19 stitches for the wound above her left eye. Although the scar healing process was uneventful, the girl said that she and her Pomeranian are still uncomfortable around large dogs.
According to DogBiteLaw.com, there are more than 4.7 million dog bite victims in the U.S. each year.
