Family dog leaves permanent scar on 11-year-old boy's face

Dogs can be a wonderful addition to the family, but there is always the risk that they may turn on someone.

A permanent scar was left on the face of an 11-year-old boy who was attacked by his family's Chinese Shar-Pei dog on Christmas Day, the Daily Mail reports.

Finn O'Mahoney was watching TV when the animal "launched itself through the air without any warning at all and clamped itself onto [his face]," said the boy's father, quoted by the news source.

No one had made any sudden movements before the animal began snarling and biting, ripping open Finn's cheek. The boy sustained puncture wounds to his mouth and throat, and also had a two-inch gash from his eye to his nose. He underwent several hours of surgery and received 18 stitches to his face.

According to DogBiteLaw.com, the Chinese Shar-Pei is among the breeds that are least likely to attack or maim a human being, with pittbulls and rottweilers being the most likely.

Those who are left with scars after a dog attack may find silicone ointment useful in helping to reduce the appearance of unsightly marks.
