Edmonton man's face is permanently scarred after butcher knife attack

A butcher knife attack in Edmonton, Canada, has left an innocent man with permanent facial scars, according to the Edmonton Sun.

Patrick Kennedy was returning home from a Christmas party when he stopped outside to smoke. He was approached by Cory Oldwoman, 21, who asked him for a cigarette. Kennedy refused, but offered the remainder of the one he was smoking.

Without warning, Oldwoman pulled out a foot-long butcher knife and began slashing Kennedy's face and neck. A friend of the victim, who was exiting an apartment nearby, ran over to help. The injuries required 60 stitches to repair.

"[This was] an unprovoked assault on a random individual who was outside a cab, peacefully smoking a cigarette," said Judge John Henderson, quoted by the news source.

He added that the event has left the victim with "emotional and psychological damage" in addition to his permanent scars, and sentenced Oldwoman to five years in prison.

According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, violent crime victimizations occur in an estimated 17.1 in 1,000 people over the age of 12.

When these incidents result in severe scars, silicone gel sheeting may be an effective technique to lessen their appearance.
