Drunk man wounds former wife with machete-like weapon

An Australian man has received a jail sentence of 14 months after leaving a permanent scar on the face of his estranged wife.

Truck driver Leonardo Rodrigues was "fuelled by jealousy and apparently the need to be in control," according to Justice Jenny Blokland, quoted by the news source. Under the influence of alcohol, he slashed his former partner's face with a traditional East Timorese sword known as a pedang, which resembles a machete.

The woman, who had been walking home in the northern suburbs of Darwin, was left with a severe gash down her cheek that is expected to be permanent, according to Justice Blokland.

Her 51-year-old attacker expressed remorse, saying that he felt "lower than a snake's belly" because of the incident, quoted by the news provider.

The Australian Domestic and Family Violence Clearinghouse, which conducted a study among 6,300 women in the country, revealed that 42 percent of females reported having experienced violence at the hands of a previous partner.

Many cases of domestic violence result in injury. Those who sustain scars from such incidents may turn to silicone ointment, a scar treatment method that could eliminate the appearance of their blemishes.
