Broken bottle attack leaves UK woman with 300 stitches in her face
A Huddersfield, UK, woman required 300 stitches in her face after being attacked with a broken bottle outside of a bus station, the Daily Mail reports.
The victim, Sarah Brewins, allegedly initiated the altercation by hitting Joanna Stokes. Stokes and her companion, Peter Smith, retaliated by unleashing a brutal attack that involved cutting Brewins's face with pieces of a broken bottle.
"Having been handed the glass by Mr. Smith, with his encouragement and with his words, you proceeded to do as requested," Judge Durham Hall told Stokes, according to the news source. "You carved, twisted and ground the glass into that woman's face. It may be that the scars will heal, but the mental turmoil [never will]."
Brewins was treated by plastic surgeons at Bradford Royal Infirmary, where she received general anesthetic before doctors repaired her face.
The Bureau of Justice Statistics reports that in 2009, approximately 4.3 million nonfatal violent crimes were reported.
Silicone gel sheeting may be an effective way to treat severe scars and to reduce their appearance.
