Broadway incident leaves two audience members with scars
Two audience members have been left with facial scars after they were struck by a prop that flew offstage during a performance of the Broadway show Billy Elliott, according to Avvo.
Elaine Rosen, 54, and Cynthia Noblit, 60, were hit by a plastic crate that had either slipped out of a performer's hands or was accidentally kicked into the audience during the show. Both women were hospitalized after the incident. Rosen had a deep gash that left a permanent scar, while Noblit suffered a concussion.
The two women have since filed a lawsuit in Manhattan federal court against the show's producers for failing to give notice or warning of any potential hazards to audience members. They are asking for $2 million each in damages.
According to The Demographics of the Broadway Audience, a 2009-2010 report published by the Broadway League, an estimated 66 percent of the audience was female. The average age of theatergoers was 47.9 years, which is older than in previous seasons.
Although most shows do not result in harm to the audience members, those who sustain injuries may find silicone ointment to be an effective scar treatment method.
