Bottle attack in bar brawl leaves Dublin man with permanent facial scar

A bar brawl has left a Dublin, Ireland, man with a permanent facial scar above his eye, the Evening Herald Newspaper reports.

Pub designer Ian Dowling struck Shane O'Regan over the head with a bottle of Corona, after O'Regan allegedly stroked his face in a mocking way. The two men had been exchanging heated words, during which Dowling claims O'Regan began the physical confrontation by pushing and knocking him off balance.

Dowling was found guilty of assault, which he denied in court, claiming that he had hit the other man out of self-defense.

Although Judge Ann Watkin determined that the victim was "not blameless," she decreed that "he should not have been hit with the bottle," as quoted by the news source.

According to the Marin Institute, the availability of alcohol has been closely associated with violent assaults. In 45 percent of cases of interpersonal assault, those men involved had been drinking.

Those who are left with scars from such incidents may turn to silicone ointment, a topical medication that may reduce the appearance of unsightly marks.
