Surgery for congenital heart defect leaves nine-year-old with chest scar

At just nine years of age, George Lee has been left with a long, puffy scar stretching down the length of his chest, the Miami Herald reports. The Fort Lauderdale fourth-grader underwent a surgical operation six months ago to repair a hole in his heart and improve his blood circulation.

These congenital defects were found during a routine visit to the doctor. George's heart condition has prompted his physicians to warn him not to run, jump, shoot hoops or bike, but the boy's love of sports led him to defy their expectations.

Two months ago, he played football at the Boys and Girls Club, which led to a injury that landed him in the hospital for three days. While recovering there, he engaged in a game of basketball with the other patients.

His mother's constant pleas for him not to sneak in a game have only been met with a calm "I can't promise that," according to the news source.

However, doctors hope that the energetic boy will eventually be able to play without limits.

According to the University of Iowa, one out of every 100 babies is born with a congenital heart defect.

Those who undergo cardiovascular surgery may be able to reduce the appearance of scars through the use of silicone ointment.
