There are concerns about the baby's health, finances to consider, Lamaze classes not to mention the financial concerns that a new baby can bring into a family dynamic. For an increasing number of women each year those considerations include scar treatment, as BusinessWeek magazine reports that the number of women receiving a Cesarean Section.
Using data drawn between the years 1996 and 2007, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Health Statistics determined that at least 32 percent of women are undergoing the surgical procedure in lieu of having a live birth - a 53 percent increase over previous findings.
The surgical procedure requires doctors to make an incision in a pregnant woman's abdomen and uterus to deliver one or more babies. In the past the procedure was reserved strictly for occasions when a vaginal birth would put the child's or the mother's life at risk, though it is now available upon the request of the mother.
While, if performed properly, the procedure is safe, it does tend to leave a long scar along the mother's abdomen. Expectant mothers might consider planning a scar treatment routine involving silicone ointment to reduce the visibility of the tissue after the delivery.
